Summertime in Door County Wisconsin!

Last fall, we shared some pictures of beautiful Door County. Here are some pics of a day last week when we went up again in the good ole summer time.

Except it still is rather early for Lake Michigan to warm up. This day the weather was in the 80's but at Whitefish Bay Beach the winds were stirring up the lake to three foot or more waves and the water temperature was 62 degrees. But never let it be said that I am a wimp and I have learned how to deal with this. You go in several times, a little bit at a time. You get your feet up to your knees wet and paining like crazy and then you run out and wait a bit.
You keep doing this for 5 or 6 times and then dunk. Water soon becomes quite tolerable. And with the lovely sand bottom and with the waves trying to knock you over, a lot of fun. Jim comes running in freezing one more time.

After our invigorating swim, we looked for a place to eat. My son, Jim, had never had a genuine Door County Fish Boil so we found a place in Bailey's Harbor just about ready to serve up the last batch. It is a spectacular show and the dinner is delicious. They cook it over an open fire in a big kettle and at the last minute they throw keosene on the fire to make it boil over. That is supposed to get all the fat out of the dinner. Then they serve it with cups of drawn butter poured all over it!!!!!

You are very brave, Bernie. I can't imagine me braving such cold water. It seemed like a lovely day out though, with an excellent meal to finish.

So glad that Bernie recommended your blog. I will enjoy stopping by from time to time. In my experience women who love to swim seem to be optimists. On any family holiday we took if we crossed a bridge we knew Dad would be looking for a turn to make because Mom would want to swim. We'd all jump in then Dad would tie our bathing suits to the ariel so they would be dry by the next time we crossed a river or saw a sign indicating a lake. I love meeting people who sieze the day!

I love Wisconsin! My Dad purchased a small house near a lake in Wisconsin and that's where my Grandparents lived. We would spend many a wonderful summer days on that lake. Door County is beautiful and I'm glad you had a fun time. I always take pics of my food and get made fun of so I'm glad I found someone else who does the same! Looks delish by the way!

Hope that water warms up by August when I visit up there. I've never had a fish boil either. Looks like fun. Don't you have a booya thing up there, too.

I'm one of those that hate's cold water, even in the swimming pool, and will usually not get out again unless I'm going to stay out as I don't want to have to go thru the painful transition more than once!

That food looks awesome - despite the butter! And I think it's wonderful that you and Jim go out to do something fun together. Some sons only take their old mom's to the local cafeteria on senior night and call it a treat!

Hi Bernie,
I'd be too chicken to go into such cold water! Good for you for braving it.
Our mutual friend Von told me to check in with you and suggested I invite you to send me a memory of one of your favourite dresses for my Memories of a Dress Project. I'll be posting one from Von shortly.
Best wishes!

I am impressed by your bravery - water temperature must have been bracing to say the least! We have a second home in inland Spain where we have decided not to pay the high costs to have the pool heated - not until we can do it with solar panels and be environmentally sound. Anyhow last Summer, and we hope this year, by uncovering the pool at the beginning of June the high temperatures in the area do slowly warm the pool but you do take a few minutes to get over the sudden drop in body temperature. Today on my blog I posted some pool pictures just to keep me working until I leave for hols. next month.

Wow, 62 degree water would be a bit chilly even on a hot day. Love the fish boil, had the best "low country boil" in New Orleans when I was there. Great way to cook a meal, all those flavors coming together, and fun to eat too.

My parents were both from Wisconsin and every year went to Door County. Mom wanted me to go sometime too and I never was able to go with her. I look forward to doing that sometime. Looks like you found fun, family, food and water...a great combination!!

It sounds like a perfect summer day. You're much braver than I am about getting in the cold water, but you definitely made it look worthwhile. Where was your new dog?

Found you via the "other" Bernie! Your dip in the cold water sounds SO inviting. In fact, we're going to our friends' lake today! It's been extremely hot here. Only way to stay cool is to stay inside....

The fish you enjoyed sound great-butter and all! I think grilled chicken is on our menu today. I'm taking a fabulous tossed salad, there will be potato salad and homemade ice cream, too.
