BITCHING DAY--WARNING

There are a lot of things that disappoint me on the political scene but I won't go into that. I would like to express my opinion about the Supreme Court which is (supposed to be) apolitical. I am in complete disagreement with the make-up of the court today. They all are from the Eastern part of the country and they have no idea what goes on in the Midwest, the South, or the West, and I think they should also be represented on the highest court in the land. I also think that a lot of universities besides Yale and Harvard can produce judges just as well as they can. Everyone is a graduate of Yale or Harvard. Ridiculous! And if one wants to go there, they are leaving out representation from the largest religious group in America. How did this court end up being so undiverse? Have we been so into making sure we have racial and sexual representation that we have forgotten these other factors which are very important also? I have nothing against the current candidate but she is of the same mold also. I think it is time for a change in the way our judges are chosen. Certainly the criteria should change. And politics should not enter into in any way.

Well, that is the important thing I wanted to get off my chest this morning.

I also wanted you to know that I have bought a new computer and a printer as well . Jim and I went to get it at Office Max . We got it home and Jim set it up and it didn't work. The something wasn't talking to the hard drive. Some of you might know what I am talking about because I sure don't. Anyhow we packed it up and Jim brought it back. We had decided to get another brand and Office Max did not carry that brand and so they would not take it back without charging us 15% of the total bill, a charge for restocking it, and it amounted to quite a bit. We refused to pay it and took the computer back and brought it to another Office Max on the other side of town and he was most sympathetic and gave us a new one even without the receipt! All of which proves different owners have better customer relations. And don't take this crap about paying to return a defective computer.

This is a bad post. But I did want to see if anyone out there agrees with me about the Supreme Court and I did want to let you know I am up and running with a new and fast computer. It is heaven not to have to wait 30 minutes for it to boot up in the morning and also to constantly not get "windows not responding" every two minutes whenever I tried to do something.

And I hope you all have a good day today even after reading my gripes.

Great point here: yes, more diversity is good.

You speak my mind regarding the Supreme court. However, I only agree with half of ONE of your sentences - - that one being "I have nothing against the current candidate but she is of the same mold also" - because I do have questioning her as a candidate; however I agree with the second half of your sentence, that she is, indeed, 'of the same mold'. Amen on this this particular bitching. And we should be bitching, yep.. and we should be angry about some (well.. actually most) of the crap (decision making) happening in this administration. Thanks, again, for the good read..

Thanks Bernie for giving us something to think about. There have been things I've noticed about the Supreme Court Justice selections, but where they were raised and educated - I hadn't thought about. Some things we get so used to hearing that we forget to give serious thought to it.

Glad you have a new computer!!!

It does seem the choices are political. I've no idea of the criteria but it seems that a cross section, geographically, racially and experiential is ideal. You are probably correct in saying there are many candidates who are viable. It is interesting there is much talk about the "Ivy League" sameness of the court picks.

The schools close ranks and promote their own. Who you get to know is supposed to be the REAL and MEASURABLE benefit of attending a prestigious Ivy League school.

You make some interesting points, but I am pleased the nominee is a woman.

In my states, the judges run as republicans and democrats. I've often said - how can one be impartial if affiliated with one party.

Glad you have a new computer. You will enjoy it.

allthough not from America and therefor no knowledge about the 'choosing system' it sounds like a non democratic way of getting to a good, sound and objective panel of people...
If you're chosen for a school you attended, your political views or what state you come from...it's starting to sound like a matter of who you know and not what your quality's would be as a judge...

not good...

Judges should represent all sectors shouldn't they for balance?

Sometimes it just feels good to get a gripe out in the open, doesn't it! And you're right about customer service...it always surprises me when one store seems to care so little about good will, and another goes over and above.

Good griping girl! Congrats on the new computer. I had to go get a new monitor screen today and had a bit of trouble getting it to work, but all is well now. Hope tomorrow is a happier day!

Time, or Life (I forget which) had a cartoon last week reflecting this. Yep, great diversity - from the same two schools.

Your blog name attracted me, your writing inspires me to stay. Good on you Bernie, I have friends in their 40s who won't tackle a blog! I'm also on the other side of the world so you may enjoy the kangaroos of Scrubby Bush. Off to introduce my 80 something neighbour to your blog!

Glad to see in your 80's bitchin' is still going strong, gives me hope. On the Supreme Court...since lower Judges are elected through the political system and the Supreme Court Judges are appointed by politicians it can be nothing but political. Personally I think it should be a merit system but give me a woman any day.

Congrats on the PC hope this will allow you to proved us with more posts.

I've just been grateful another woman was being considered, but definitely agree with what you're saying.

So glad you've got a new computer. I hope it means you'll be posting more. :-)

Commiserations on your gripes about the stranglehold the Ivy League colleges have on your Supreme Court. Here in the UK, the same thing runs right through public life and 26 Prime Ministers (including our new one) went to Oxford.
Winston Churchill, however, didn't attend university and took three attempts to get into Sandhurst Military College - he didn't do so badly!
Congrats on the new computer and hope it proves reliable.

Where were these complaints about the Supreme Court when George Bush was stuffing the court with less than stellar candidates for eight years? At least the current candidate is well regarded for her intelligence and knowledge of the law. We don't need any more judges like Clarence Thomas.
